What Not to Store in a Storage Unit
For everyone’s safety, certain items are not allowed in storage units at Smart Self Storage.
Please review this list before moving in, and contact us if you are unsure whether an item is allowed.
Storage units are intended for normal personal property and business belongings. Items that are unsafe,
illegal, perishable, likely to leak, likely to smell, or likely to attract pests should not be stored.
!Flammable, Hazardous, or Toxic Items
Do not store items that could create a fire, safety, chemical, or environmental hazard.
- Gasoline, fuel, oil, grease, or vehicle fluids
- Propane tanks, fuel cans, or similar containers
- Fireworks, explosives, or other dangerous materials
- Chemicals, pesticides, paint thinner, or toxic substances
!Food, Liquids, Waste, or Odor-Causing Items
Do not store anything that can spoil, leak, attract pests, create odors, or cause damage to the facility.
- Food, perishables, or opened food containers
- Liquids, liquid waste, wet items, or leaking items
- Trash, refuse, garbage, or disposal items
- Anything that creates strong odors or pest issues
!Illegal or Restricted Items
Storage units may not be used for illegal, restricted, or regulated items.
- Illegal drugs, contraband, or stolen property
- Firearms, ammunition, or weapons
- Prescription medication
- Alcohol or marijuana
!Animals, Plants, or Organic Materials
Living items and organic materials can create safety, odor, moisture, and pest problems.
- Animals, insects, or any living creatures
- Plants, soil, compost, or yard waste
- Damp organic items or materials that may mold
- Items likely to attract rodents, insects, or pests
!Batteries, Tires, and Vehicle-Related Items
Vehicle-related items can create fire, leak, odor, and disposal risks.
- Lithium batteries stored or charged in the unit
- Battery charging of tools, scooters, e-bikes, or similar items
- Loose batteries, loose tires, or loose vehicle parts
- Fuel, oil, grease, lubricants, or vehicle fluids
!High-Value or Irreplaceable Items
Some items may not be prohibited because they are dangerous, but they are not recommended for storage.
- Cash, coins, jewelry, or negotiable items
- Fine art, antiques, heirlooms, or collectibles
- Items with sentimental or irreplaceable value
- Important documents that should be kept in a safer location
Storage Units Are for Storage Only
No sleeping, living, loitering, smoking, vaping, open flames, vehicle repair, vehicle maintenance,
business operations, or activities unrelated to storage are allowed in the unit or at the facility.
Vehicle Storage Reminder
Vehicles must be approved for storage and may be subject to additional requirements. No vehicle work,
oil changes, fluid changes, battery charging, fuel cans, propane tanks, leaking fluids, loose batteries,
or loose tires are allowed in storage units.
